Disciplinary Case Studies: Physical Sciences / Knobloch, Jürgen (CERN)
Three disciplines - physical sciences, astronomy, and biological sciences - were selected to illustrate the varying selection, appraisal and retention practices in the scientific community. Jürgen Knobloch, from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), introduced both the archiving and end-user perspectives for the physical sciences, using particle physics as an example..

Total neutron cross-section measurement on CH with a novel 3D-projection scintillator detector / Agarwal, A. (UPenn, Philadelphia) ; Budd, H. (Rochester U.) ; Capo, J. (Barcelona, IFAE) ; Chaves, J. ; Chong, P. (UPenn, Philadelphia) ; Christodoulou, G. (CERN) ; Danilov, M. (Lebedev Inst.) ; Dergacheva, A. (Moscow, INR) ; De Roeck, A. (CERN) ; Dokania, N. (Stony Brook U.) et al.
In order to extract neutrino oscillation parameters, precision long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments rely on detailed models of neutrino interactions with nuclei. These models constitute an important source of systematic uncertainty, partially because detectors to date have been blind to final state neutrons. [...]

Conversion coefficients from total air kerma to the newly proposed ICRU/ICRP operational quantities for radiation protection for photon reference radiation qualities / Behrens, Rolf (Braunschweig, Phys. Tech. Bund.) ; Otto, Thomas (CERN)
Abstract The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) has recently proposed a set of new operational quantities for radiation protection. ICRU supplied conversion coefficients for mono-energetic photons but not for photon reference radiation qualities defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in ISO 4037 and by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in IEC 61267. Concept development of an on-chip PET system / Clement, Christoph (Bern U.) ; Birindelli, Gabriele (Bern U.) ; Pizzichemi, Marco (CERN ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Pagano, Fiammetta (CERN ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Julio, Marianna Kruithof‑De (Bern U.) ; Ziegler, Sibylle (LMU Munich (main)) ; Rominger, Axel (Bern U.) ; Aufray, Etiennette (CERN) ; Shi, Kuangyu (Bern U.)
Organs-on-Chips (OOCs), microdevices mimicking in vivo organs, find growing applications in disease modeling and drug discovery. With the increasing number of uses comes a strong demand for imaging capabilities of OOCs as monitoring physiologic processes within OOCs is vital for the continuous improvement of this technology. The gas-phase formation mechanism of iodic acid as an atmospheric aerosol source / Finkenzeller, Henning (Colorado U. ; Colorado U., CIRES) ; Iyer, Siddharth (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; He, Xu-Cheng (Helsinki U.) ; Simon, Mario (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Koenig, Theodore K (Colorado U. ; Colorado U., CIRES ; Peking U., Beijing) ; Lee, Christopher F (Colorado U. ; Colorado U., CIRES) ; Valiev, Rashid (Helsinki U.) ; Hofbauer, Victoria (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Amorim, Antonio (Lisbon U.) ; Baalbaki, Rima (Helsinki U.) et al.
AbstractIodine is a reactive trace element in atmospheric chemistry that destroys ozone and nucleates particles. Iodine emissions have tripled since 1950 and are projected to keep increasing with rising O3 surface concentrations. [...]

Influence of Porosity on Ultra-High Vacuum Gas-Tightness in Cold-Sprayed Aluminum Coatings / Weiller, Sébastien (U. PSL) ; Francesco, Delloro (U. PSL) ; François, Willot (U. PSL) ; Alain, Thorel (U. PSL) ; Jeandin, Michel (U. PSL) ; Cédric, Garion (CERN)
Vacuum chambers used in high-energy particle accelerator experiments are conventionally made of bulk beryllium, which shows signifcant drawbacks due to cost and toxicity. An alternative solution could be to develop chambers made of polymer-based composites. Since these materials exhibit high outgassing not compatible with an ultra-high vacuum environment, a suitable gas-tight coating is required. Cold spray deposition of aluminum can be a solution, provided that the coating behaves as a perfect vacuum barrier. [...]

Robot-Aided Contactless Monitoring of Workers’ Cardiac Activity in Hazardous Environment / Cittadini, Roberto (CERN ; Campus BioMedico U., Rome) ; Buonocore, Luca Rosario (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Zollo, Loredana (Rome U. ; Campus BioMedico U., Rome)
Vital signals monitoring is expected to support people in their daily activities in the near future, following continuous strides in developing health technologies for complex and hazardous environments. As the industry 4.0 revolution grows, robotic systems are increasingly deployed to support health monitoring, even though current robotic systems merely enable navigation and exploration of the surrounding environment to find people to be monitored, without adaptation of their behaviour to improve the quality of the health monitoring. At the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), a wireless personnel safety prototype has been developed to assist workers in harsh environments, although this system needs to be improved in terms of invasiveness and portability. The crystals of (Lu,Gd)3(Ga,Al)5O12 multicomponent garnets with high density ρ and effective atomic number Zeff are characterized by high scintillation efficiency and a light yield value up to 50,000 ph/MeV. During recent years, single-crystalline films and composite film/crystal scintillators were developed on the basis of these multicomponent garnets. [...]

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) influences climate via cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation resulting from its oxidation products (mainly methanesulfonic acid, MSA, and sulfuric acid, H2SO4). Despite their importance, accurate prediction of MSA and H2SO4 from DMS oxidation remains challenging. [...]
