In proton beam therapy, knowledge of the detailed beam properties is essential to ensure effective dose delivery to the patient. In clinical practice, currently used interceptive ionisation chambers require daily calibration and suffer from slow response time. [...]

Deep learning for anomaly detection in high-energy beam dump data from the Large Hadron Collider / Hulphers, Fredrik (Technische Universitat Munchen (DE))
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, in which beams of particles are accelerated to near the speed of light. Partial losses of high-energy beams can damage crucial LHC equipment, requiring tedious and costly reparations. [...]

Dynamic pressure evolution during the LHC operation / Bilgen, S (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Sattonnay, G (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Mercier, B (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Henrist, B (CERN)
For the accelerator community and the vacuum scientists, the understanding of the beam interactions with a vacuum chamber is fundamental to provide solutions to mitigate pressure rises induced by electron, photon, and ion molecular desorption. Moreover, beam instabilities induced by ion and electron clouds must be investigated in order to find solutions to reduce them. [...]

Fixed-target program upgrade and prospects at LHCb / Franzoso, Edoardo (Ferrara U. ; INFN, Ferrara) /LHCb Collaboration
LHCb has the unique capability to operate in fixed-target mode to study collisions of the LHC beams on fixed targets. In Run3, the internal gas target is going to be upgraded to allow for a wider selection of target gas species and a significant increase of the rates of fixed-target collisions by up to two orders of magnitude. [...]

Report from LHC MD 3312: Replicating HL-LHC DA / Dilly, Joschua Werner (Humboldt University of Berlin (DE)) ; Albert, Markus (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix Simon (CERN) ; Coello De Portugal - Martinez Vazquez, Jaime Maria ; Dalena, Barbara (Université Paris-Saclay (FR)) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen Hamish (CERN) ; Malina, Lukas ; Persson, Tobias Hakan Bjorn (CERN) et al.
During MD3312 on the 30.10.2018 the non-linear conditions in the insertion regions of the planned HL-LHC were replicated to our best knowledge and within the capabilities of the hardware currently available in the LHC: A flat ATS-optics scheme of beta* = 15cm / 60cm in IP1 and IP5 was applied as well as sextupole, octupole and (normal) dodecapole errors were introduced into the machine via the corrector magnets in the interaction regions. J-PARC Contributions to the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) Project / Ohmori, Chihiro (J-PARC) ; Paoluzzi, Mauro (CERN) ; Tamura, Fumihiko (J-PARC ; JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Hasegawa, Katsushi (J-PARC) ; Sugiyama, Yasuyuki (J-PARC) ; Shirakata, Masashi (J-PARC) ; Yoshii, Masahito (J-PARC)
The LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) was launched in 2010 in synergy with the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project.^2) It includes the consolidation/upgrade of the PS Booster RF systems:^3,4) all the existing ferrite-loaded RF cavities are being replaced with wideband RF systems during the 2019–2020 long shut down. The magnetic-annealed cores improve the cavity performance and reduce the number of the straight sections for RF systems. [...]

Non-monotonic dependence of heat loads induced by electron cloud on bunch population at the LHC / Skripka, Galina (CERN ; Dubna, JINR) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN)
Electron cloud effects are among the main performance limitations for the operation of the Large Hadron Collider with 25 ns bunch spacing. Electrons impacting on the beam screens of the superconducting magnets induce a significant heat load reaching values close to the full cooling capacity available from the cryogenic system in some LHC sectors. Beam-induced Background Simulations for the CMS Experiment at the LHC / Azhgirey, Igor (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bayshev, Igor (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Dabrowski, Anne (CERN) ; Kurochkin, Igor (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Mallows, Sophie (KIT, Karlsruhe, IPE) ; Riabchikova, Anastasiia (Serpukhov, IHEP)
Beam-induced background comes from interactions of the beam and beam halo particles with either the residual gas in the vacuum chamber of accelerator or the collimators that define the beam aperture. Beam-induced processes can potentially be a significant source of background for physics analyses at the LHC. [...]

Run your own experiment using CERN's public LHC data / Aron, Jacob
Why build your own particle accelerator when you can borrow CERN’s? The home of the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland, has started putting data from its experiments online for anyone to use. They hope it could fuel education, art and perhaps even physics discoveries..
